Libertango 5tet is a band with a long story.
In 1992, accordionist Francesco Calì met guitarist Gino De Vita during an orchestral course in the magical city of Matera. Both being from Sicily, they quickly formed a duo exploring and blending American jazz, Satie, Jobim and especially Piazzolla. Soon after, a sax-flutist, a bassist and a drummer joined the duo, thus creating Libertango 5tet.
Together the five friends created a unique musical project, where jazz is the root of the tree and other cultures are the branches and the leaves.
Old and New Tango, Brazilian sounds, Mediterranean flavours are among the genres that enrich the multi-coloured world of this Quintet.
During the 90's, the band boasts a rich list of events, first of all the release of the first CD, LIBERTANGO, a heartfelt tribute to the great Argentinean composer Astor Piazzolla, who was always an huge inspiration for the group.
Libertango 5tet is hereafter invited to perform in a bunch of prestigious venues, the Greek Theatre in Segesta and the "E" Temple in Selinunte among many others.
The CD does not go unobserved and even some of our times greatest jazz musicians witness their appreciation with very positive appraisals. Musicians like Kenny Barron, Bob Mintzer, Ralph Towner, John Scofield and Jean Pierre Como have enjoyed listening to the record:
The fact that accordion player Francesco Calì moved to Denmark in 2003 didn't prevent the band to work on a second album, the more electric-oriented NIMRA touring in both Denmark and Italy. Darker than the first album, NIMRA reflects the new status of the band, the five friends growing older and more on the mature side.
The new album from Libertango 5tet was initiated by Quarantanove Edizioni, Emmanuel Maccarrone, who is the producer of the new album from Libertango 5tet: POINT OF NO RETURN. Ten original compositions, which display the band's love for jazz music influenced by Mediterranean flavours, a touch of classical music, the counterpoint as a compositional method blended with improvisation and most of all - the pure pleasure of keeping the dream alive!
